Building towards an appearance in the major Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on April 19th, Sertorius has returned to the track in typically competitive form this preparation, unlucky to finish second to Moment Of Change in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) first-up on February 22nd before running a strong third in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) on March 8th.

Bumped at the initial run and blocked for a run when fifth in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) on March 22nd, the Galileo gelding displayed a keen turn of foot to overcome interference and finish fourth in the Group 1 The BMW at Rosehill last weekend, but will have to overcome the slightly awkward barrier 9 if to return to the winner’s circle this weekend.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse will be offered twice the chance for success in the 2014 Chairman’s Handicap, having accepted positions in the final field for talented pair The Offer and Hippopus.

Securing an impressive four wins and five places from only 15 race stats to date, The Offer has quickly built to the task this preparation; following up a disappointing run for sixth over 14 first-up with a strong performance for third in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) on March 15th before returning to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 NE Manion Cup (2400m) last time out.

Having drawn the ideal inside barrier for the 2014 Chairman’s Handicap, Waterhouse is confident of The Offer securing another title in week 1 of The Championships.

Unlucky to finish second behind Junoob in the well-contested Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) last weekend, Hippopus is offered good opportunity to continue his strong run of form in the 2014 Chairman’s Handicap, having been allocated the ideal barrier 6.

Securing a total of four wins and four places from only eighteen starts to date, the High Chapparal gelding finished fifth in the 2013 Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) and will be confident of another strong Derby day appearance this season.

Trainer Chris Waller is also launch a two-pronged attack on the 2014 Chairman’s Handicap, accepting positions in the final field for exciting stable mates Permit and Opinion.

Disappointing when eighth in the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) last time out on March 1st, Permit (barrier 5) has actually produced a rather strong preparation this time in, securing wins in both the Listed Christmas Cup (2400m) and Listed Tattersall’s Club Cup (2400m) prior to his most recent effort.

Opinion arguably offers Waller his greatest chance of 2014 Chairman’s Handicap success this weekend, having returned to the track in peak condition this preparation.

Finishing sixth in the TAB Rewards Maiden (1400m) first-up on February 15th, the talented Oasis Dream gelding beat Her Majesty The Queen-owned Carlton House to the line to win the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) on March 1st, and was unlucky to finish second in both the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) and NE Manion Cup in his two proceeding appearances.
