Berry Partners The Offer to 2014 Chairman’s Handicap Triumph

April 12th, 2014

Jockey Tommy Berry has delivered a perfectly timed ride on pre-post favourite The Offer to win the Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) on day 1 of The Championships at Royal Randwick Racecourse this afternoon.

Jumping well, The Offer settled in prime position mid-pack when passing the post for the first time, allowing early leaders Retort Courteous, Hippopus and Tremecto set a steady pace rounding the back straight.

Needing to hook particularly wide rounding the final bend, the Montjeu gelding appeared to have given his rivals slightly too much of a lead, but quickly moved into prime position, pulling clear with 100 metres left to travel and finding the line a length ahead of Tremec and Hippopus.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse was delighted with The Offer’s performance in the 2014 Chairman’s Handicap, confirming the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) as the next target for the in-form five-year-old.

“Absolutely delighted, delighted for Tommy and just delighted for the owners of The Offer, this is such an exciting stayer” Waterhouse said.

“He just loves the going, loves to stay and he’s a really exciting horse.”

Jockey Tommy Berry broke through for a maiden win since the tragic passing of twin brother Nathan the preceding week, immediately crediting him for the Chairman’s Handicap victory.

“That was Nathan’s win today” an emotional Berry said following the standout performance.

“Coming here today and being able to ride a winner for him is very special.

“I was thinking about it the whole way; it’s been a pretty long week since Nathan passed and I’ve been waiting for that winner to pay him back.

“This is my job and this was Nathan’s job; it’s something we love doing.

“I’m just glad I can live his dream as well as mine.”

Having returned to the track in scintillating form this preparation, The Offer will be aiming for a third consecutive victory in next weekend’s major Group 1 Sydney Cup, having claimed the Group 3 NE Manion Cup (2400m) prior to today’s triumph.
